Psst, wanna buy a bridge?

Well yes you can!

The old Borden bridge near Saskatoon Saskatchewan was built in 1936 primarily as a make-work project to employ locals in the area. In 1985, it was closed as a new dual-span bridge was built nearby across the North Saskatchewan River about 50 kilometres northwest of Saskatoon on Hwy 16, the “Yellowhead Highway”..

In 2008 the span was sold to Orville Middleton for $33,000 dollars. His intention was to turn it into an open-air dance hall. However, the provincial Architectural Heritage Society expressed concern over this use.

The rural municipality also insisted on a study of the stability of the riverbank which Middleton said would cost over $150,000, which he said he wasn’t prepared to spend, especially with no guarantee his plans would later be approved.

Now aged 92 Middleton said, “Every time you had an idea, they had so many things you had to do with no guarantee that after they were done you could go ahead and do what you wanted to do in the first place,”

He says, “I like dancing and it seemed like such a wonderful place”, but now says he’s given up trying to get approval from the municipality of Corman Park and has put it up for sale at an asking price of a million dollars….or best offer.

He says that failing a reasonable offer, he’ll donate the bridge and land to the Canadian Wildlife Association
