Pope invited to Montreal for 375th anniversary in 2017

Pope Francis was invited to Montreal for the city’s 375th anniversary in 2017.  Montreal Mayor Denis Coderre met the Pope today at the Vatican, and extended the invitation.

Catholic connections

Mayor Coderre, in a two-and-a-half-page letter, emphasized Montreal’s Catholic history, a connection that is evident in two of the city’s major landmarks; the cross on top of Mount Royal, that lights up at night, and St. Joseph’s Oratory, the largest church in Canada.

The mayor also described “a certain level of cultural harmony in Montreal” and spoke of his own concerns with poverty, homelessness and the social integration of new immigrants as well as Canada’s aboriginal people within Montreal.

Coderre said a visit during the anniversary year would have a profound impact on Montrealers, with the Pope’s message of love, tolerance and peace.

Coderre visited the Vatican this week on an invitation from Archbishop of Montreal Christian Lépine.
