Canadian journalist Mohamed Fahmy has been freed from jail in Egypt, but his lawyers will try to have him deported rather than face a retrial on Feb. 23. Fahmy is one of three Al-Jazeera English journalists who were found guilty on terror-related charges in what has been roundly condemned as a sham trial.

Fellow journalist Australian Peter Greste was released and deported two weeks ago under a special government edict for foreign nationals. Fahmy reluctantly gave up his Egyptian citizenship to be eligible for the same treatment. Co-defendant Baher Mohammed holds no foreign citizenship and is not eligible for deportation.
The bail equivalent to $40,000 Canadian was paid and Fahmy rejoined his family in Cairo..
