Prince Edward Island swears in new premier

Prince Edward Island has a new leader. Wade MacLauchlan was set to be sworn in Monday as the province’s 32nd premier.

Mr. MacLauchlan, a lawyer and academic, succeeded Robert Ghiz as the provincial Liberal Party leader at a convention on Saturday,

Mr. MacLauchlan ran unopposed for the leadership and leads a party that holds 23 of the 27 seats in the provincial legislature.

He will also serve as chairman of the Council of the Federation, which is made up of all Canadian premiers.

The next P.E.I. election could be as late as April 2016. However, there are suggestions Mr. MacLauchlan, who served 10 years as president of the University of Prince Edward Island, could have more to say about election plans as early as Friday.

P.E.I, along with New Brunswick and Nova Scotia, is one of Canada’s three Maritime provinces. According to the the 2011 census, it had just under 146,000 residents.
