Woman sues for alleged sexual assault in taxi

A woman who says she was sexually assaulted in a taxi is suing the city of Montreal and the provincial body responsible for transportation. The lawsuit says officials failed to ensure the taxi transportation service is safe. Marie-Anne Legault is seeking damages of $250,000.

Montreal police received 33 complaints about assaults of a sexual nature linked to a taxi driver in 2013 and 27 in 2014, according to a request for access to information filed by the woman’s lawyer.

The lawsuit alleges officials failed to take Legault’s complaints seriously and that when she reported the incident to the Montreal Taxi Bureau, she was treated aggressively and ridiculed. Drivers must obtain licenses from the Montreal Taxi Bureau to operate.

The driver in question is not facing any charges.

Quebec’s transport minister said he would be looking into the case.
