A fraud trial, with potentially politically explosive implications, started Tuesday (April 7) as former Canadian government Senator, Mike Duffy, faces 30 charges of fraud and breach of trust, and one count of bribery.
At the heart of the charges are the disputed travel expenses of Senator Duffy and the fact that in 2013, Nigel Wright, the Chief of Staff of Canada’s Prime Minister Stephen Harper, gave the Senator a $90,000 cheque to cover those disputed expenses.
When that beame public in May of 2013, Wright resigend as the PM’s Chief of Staff, and the Prime Minister in a statement said he accepted the resignation with “great regret “.
Since then, questions continue about how much the Prime Minister knew about what his Chief of Staff had done.
