Canadians part of North American call for $15 minimum wage, April 15

Across Canada, and throughout North America, protests and demonstrations are being held Wednesday (April 15) to call for a $15 minimum hourly wage. The Fight for 15 campaign started in 2012 when fast food workers went on strike in New York City. The movement has spread far beyond the fast-food industry since.

“We are supporting a global-wide action,” Sharleen Stewart, President of SEIU Local 1 told rabble.ca. “We realized ourselves that there’s still a lot of what people consider full-time professions that are making less than $15 an hour here too,” said Stewart.

In Canada’s most populous province of Ontario a coalition of over 40 organizations is launching the Fight for $15 and Fairness campaign.

In 2014, Canada’s Official Opposition NDP promised to implement a $15 minimum hour wage if elected (an election is scheduled in October). ““It is unacceptable in a country as rich as Canada that people can work full time and still live in poverty,” said leader Thomas Mulcair.”
