Montreal opens tourist areas 24/7

Montreal’s most popular tourist areas will have the option of remaining open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, beginning this Monday.

The provincial government partnered with the City of Montreal to create a tourist designation for particular neighbourhoods in the city, allowing businesses in those areas to stay open without restriction.

Old Montreal, the Quartiers des Spectacles, the Gay Village, Chinatown and Notre Dame Island have all been newly designated as tourist hubs. This special status will last five years, starting on May 25, 2015.

“I thank the Quebec government for making this decision. It’ll have a major impact on the vitality of our businesses and our attractiveness and competitiveness as a city,” Mayor Denis Coderre said in a statement.

“By establishing a tourist zone where businesses can be open 24 hours, seven days a week, we’re responding to the demands of our retailers and customers.”
