Night tour of Montreal kicks off cycling season

Bicycles will take over some Montreal streets tonight with thousands expected to participate in the annual Tour la Nuit. The province of Quebec has a very active cycling community with the group Velo-Quebec spearheading major events to encourage people to use bikes more and to use them safely.

Wear a costume, be safe!

This evening, 21 km of roadway will be closed to traffic and, for a fee, people will be able to pedal their way along it unimpeded. Velo-Quebec takes the opportunity to educate people on the importance of being visible at night, but it also encourages fun by inviting people to wear costumes.

Daytime tour on Sunday

On Sunday starting in the morning, cyclists can take another tour of Montreal of between 50 and 100 km offered in five different route options. Roads along the route will again be closed to traffic. Some of the circuit goes along the waterfront of Montreal, which is an island in the St. Lawrence River.
