Two airlines refuse smaller carry-on standards

Air Canada and West Jet say they will not conform to guidelines that would shrink the size of luggage allowed into the cabins of their airplanes. The International Air Transport Association announced the new guidelines to harmonize rules among the different airlines and to make space in crowded overhead bins.

People recently increased the amount of luggage they carry into the cabin after several airlines reduced the amount of allowable checked luggage or levied fees on them.

Under the new guidelines cabin luggage would have to measure a maximum of 55cm tall by 35cm wide by 20cm deep.

Air Canada and West Jet allow slightly larger bags and they have no plans to change their standards. However, Air Canada says it supports the general concept of harmonizing carry-on limits because it will make it easier for customers connecting with different airlines.
