Wimbledon watch – the Canadian view

Wimbledon is one of the high points of the international tennis season, and this year eclipses last year for many fans in Canada.

Vasek Pospisil is carrying the flag at the moment. Milos Raonic is now out, dealing with injuries that have plagued him, and Genie Bouchard‘s early exit remains a mystery.

Bob Babinski, a Montreal freelance sports reporter, producer and coach of former athletes transitioning to broadcasting, has some interesting observations on Wimbledon, this year and last.

Listen

Babinski maintains the meteoric rise last season put the 20 year-old Bouchard in a place she just wasn’t ready for, and what he refers to as a ‘humiliating defeat’ has broken the Montrealer’s confidence.

Bouchard, in an interview just before this Wimbledon match, coldly expressed her ongoing determination despite the outcome on Tuesday June 30th.  Now it remains to be seen if the sweetheart of sponsors will rise to a comeback.

The defeat this year , in the first round, at the hands of 117th ranked Duan Ying-Ying from China, dropped Genie Bouchard from #6 to #12 in the rankings of Women’s Singles,

And as for the upcoming Pan Am Games, Babinski is looking for, what he describes as, some of the more obscure sports, such as speed roller-blading.  He says in this arena, the Latin Americans are the ones to watch. And the big event, the 100-metre final will be a great contest between the Americans and Jamaicans, as well as our Canadian contingent.
