Repairs force Bluenose ll back to port but open sea likely awaits this weekend. We see her from a distance of perhaps 100 metres, sitting next to a wooden dock, her prow pointed forward. Her colour is dark blue to black and her two masts stretch into the sky. Behind her the ground is brown, an indication that it is either spring or fall. In the distance sits a large, brick Victorian building with three steeples visible.

Bluenose ll in port for repairs

One of Canada’s most enduring and endearing symbols, the Bluenose ll, is in dry dock again undergoing repairs after bearing in its steering pump broke.

The problem was detected while the vessel was sailing this week, forcing her to return to harbour in Lunenburg, Nova Scotia.

Wilson Fitt, the project manager for the Bluenose II, said a replacement bearing was sent to Nova Scotia from Vancouver on Wednesday evening and he expects repairs will be complete by Friday evening.

The schooner is expected to be back in service by the weekend.

Bluenose ll recently made her return as Nova Scotia’s sailing ambassador after a restoration beset with problems, including issues with the original steering system.

Bluenose II was launched at Lunenburg on July 24, 1963. It was built to original plans and by some of the same workers that built the original Bluenose.
