Jackson and Riopelle paintings to be auctioned off by Montreal gallery

If you are a big fan of Canadian fine arts and have a few hundred thousand dollars burning your pockets, you might want to check out Montreal’s Cosner Art Gallery.

They are organizing an auction of works by leading Canadian artists such as Alexander Young Jackson, Jean-Paul Riopelle, Alfred Pellan, Marc-Aurèle de Foy Suzor-Côté and others.

Sophie Oullet, director of the gallery, said most of the 100 or so paintings come from a single private collection. Oullet said the collector wants to remain anonymous.

“We have a few paintings that will for sure be sold for several thousands of dollars and even hundreds of thousands of dollars,” Oullet said.

Collectors from all over Canada and even overseas are expected to participate in the auction. Ouellet said she couldn’t rule out that some of the paintings by iconic Canadian artists could leave Canada.

“Most probably it will go into a Canadian collection,” Oullet said, “but we have have clients who are coming from Europe and the United States, so it might go outside Canada.”

The auction will take place on Dec. 2, at Montreal’s glitzy Ritz-Carleton Hotel. The auction will be open to the public, and prior to the sale art lovers will get to see the collection free of charge at the gallery in downtown Montreal from Nov. 23 to Dec. 1., Oullet said.
