Winter storm wallops central and eastern Canada

Millions of Canadians in central and eastern parts of the country had to get out their snow shovels as the season’s first major snow storm battered Ontario, Quebec and parts of Atlantic Canada on Tuesday.

Residents of Ontario had to deal with snow and slush as rising temperatures turned snow into freezing rain and rain in southern parts of the province. Temperatures in Toronto were projected to hit 6 C by mid-day.

Ontario Provincial Police warned motorists to be very careful saying it had to respond to over 300 accidents.

Ottawa could see 10 to 20 centimetres of snow fall today, Environment Canada says.

Southern Quebec is also under a winter storm warning. The Greater Montreal Area and parts of southeastern Quebec could get anywhere from 15 to 40 centimetres of snow by Tuesday evening.

The storm walloping Ontario and Quebec is part of a system that produced deadly tornadoes and flooding in the U.S. Midwest and Southwest. More than 40 people were killed during the Christmas holidays, including 11 in the Dallas area when tornadoes tore through the area.

Winter weather is also expected to affect portions of Nova Scotia and southern New Brunswick. Snowfall warnings and winter storm watches were in place in both provinces.
