There’s no substitute for planning ahead, and UNICEF Canada, is already set for the holiday season 2016.

In fact, the United Nations Children’s Education Fund, in conjunction with Pier-1 Imports, and Owlkids, held a contest in November 2015 for holiday greeting card designs for the upcoming 2016  Christmas/holiday season, still 11 months away!

The contest for the new card designs were for children ages 14 years and younger based on the theme “One World, One Heart”.

Last year’s theme was “Spreading the Holiday Cheer”

The winner this year was Giorgio, a 10-year-old from the province of Ontario, whose design was influenced by his Algonquin aboriginal culture.

“When I entered the first time in this contest I was very young and remember I drew an angel because they protect children all around the world. Just like UNICEF,” said Giorgio. “Now I drew a loving family who are warm even in the Arctic. They beat as one heart because they have each other. Now that I am older, I know UNICEF are people who take care and bring hope to the children all around the world like a family who have heart.”

Since the annual contests were launched in Canada in 2006, typically over 1,000 designs are submitted each year by young children from all parts of the country.

In addition to the winning design, Canadians have a chance to vote for their own favourite.  The “fan’s Choice Award” this year was a card designed by an 11-year-old from British Columbia named Sarah.

For his winning effort, Giorgio will receive a $5,000 scholarship, with $500 dollars in arts supplies for his school, while Sarah will receive $500 in art supplies.  Winners also receive an Owlkids prize pack.

The greeting cards will be sold through Pier 1 Imports stores, across Canada with 100 percent of the proceeds going to support UNICEF’s efforts worldwide.
