Olympic athletes: doping scandal, re-testing, possible bans

The issue of doping has once again rocked international sports. This time the Olympics are in the news.

Discussing the issue is Stuart Phillips, an expert on doping in sports  professor of Kinesiology at McMaster, and Tier-1 Canada Research Chair, specializing in exercise and supplements.

Re-testing of over 400 urine samples from the 2008 Beijing Olympics has resulted in 31 suspect cases from athletes in 12 countries. No names have been released as yet.

Other 250 samples from the 2012 London games are to be tested as well.

The effort was sparked by allegations from a Russian official that there was systemic tampering of urine samples at the Sochi Olympics.

Thomas Bach, president of the International Olympic Committee has hinted at banning possibly dozens of athletes from the Rio Olympics in August.

Newer and more sophisticated technology is enabling more precise testing of samples than was available previously.

In spite of that, Professor Phillips remains skeptical saying there is so much pressure and money to win that athletes and governments are unlikely to stop in their efforts to beat the anti-doping testing.
