Trudeau invites Prince William and Kate to visit Canada with their children

Canadian fans of the royal family might get a chance to see Prince William and Kate Middleton, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, and their children, Prince George and Princess Charlotte, soon.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has sent an official invitation to the royal couple and their family to visit Canada “whenever their schedules permit,” a spokeswoman at the Prime Minister’s Office confirmed to Radio Canada International.

There are no confirmed dates for the moment, she said.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, last visited Canada on their first official tour as newlyweds in 2011. William is second in line, behind his father Prince Charles, to inherit the royal throne and eventually become Canada’s head of state.

They visited four provinces and the Northwest Territories, and made a stop in Ottawa to celebrate Canada Day on Parliament Hill.

Canada’s The Globe and Mail newspaper broke the news of the royal invitation.

Maclean’s magazine’s royal watcher Patricia Treble thinks, however, it’s highly unlikely that William and Kate will bring along their small children for the royal tour of Canada, even if the prospect of the photogenic royal family and the no-less photogenic Trudeau with his family would make it a paparazzi dream come true.

“For one, Prince George is in nursery school, and they are hardly going to end their ultra-protective attitude toward their children by dragging a three-year-old on a high-profile visit, to say nothing of toddler Charlotte, who has only been seen in public three times (her birth, her christening and this year’s balcony appearance after Trooping the Colour),” Treble wrote in her magazine column.

“Indeed, the conservative couple is likely to play down any celebrity angle of the trip. The political fortunes of a charismatic PM can fall as quickly as they rise, and no royal wants to be too tightly linked to one politician, even Justin Trudeau.”
