Raonic makes history at Wimbledon

Milos Raonic made history today, the first Canadian man to make it all the way to the final at Wimbledon.

He defeated, Roger Federer, one of the giants of the game and seven-time Wimbledon champion, 6-3, 6-7 (3), 4-6, 7-5, 6-3 in the semifinals at the All England Club.

The six foot five, power-serving Raonic, from Thornhill, Ontario, just north of Toronto, is the first player representing Canada to reach a Grand Slam men’s singles final.

Eugenie Bouchard reached the Wimbledon women’s final in 2014.

Now, the sixth-seeded Raonic, 25, will face Andy Murray, No. 2, in Sunday’s final. Murray was the 2013 Wimbledon champion.

“It’ll be a bigger impact [on Canadian tennis] if I can win,” Raonic said. “I’ve got to put my energy into that.”

Milos Raonic hired former tennis bad-boy John McEnroe to coach him this season, and it’s reorted that McEnroe advised him to “smile more”.

Sunday will be a major sports day in Canada with both the Wimbledon final, and the final at the UEFA European Championship, between France and Portugal. Crowds will be gathering around television screens from coast to coast to coast.
