Newfoundland 9/11 musical, broadway bound.

‘Come From Away’ is the musical production written by David Hein and Irene Sankoff, that shares the experience of the hundreds of passengers and the people of Gander, Newfoundland, that volunteered to help them, when they were grounded in the wake of the 9/11 terrorist attack in New York City.

Now, after successful runs in California and Washington in the United States, the production is headed for Broadway. Patricia Bromley, from Newfoundland will reprise her role in the Big Apple.

In an interview with CBC Radio, Bromley said, “It just doesn’t seem real; it feels like a bit of a dream.” As for the writers, they are thrilled with the honour. “It’s a real blessing to be able to share it with so many people at this point”, Hein told CBC.

“I think audiences come out just really enjoying seeing all the hundreds of stories that we came back with packed into this 90-minute musical.

‘Come from Away’ which is Newfoundland expression for a foreigner, or someone from beyond the province, will run for two months in Toronto, beginning in November, before opening on Broadway in 2017.

There are plans then, to bring the play back to Gander, Newfoundland and Labrador.
