Aaron Driver had prepared a ‘martyrdom video’ and had a bomb as he got into a taxi when the RCMP moved in to confront him. That’s when Driver detonated the bomb, injuring himself and the taxi driver.
RCMP officers then shot Aaron Driver, who had been living under a Peace Bond, under restricted conditions in the town of Strathroy, in southwestern Ontario. The FBI had informed the RCMP that a terrorist attack was imminent, within the next 72 hours.
“I knew he was lost but I didn’t know how far gone he was”
According to the taxi driver, Driver was heading to a mall in the nearby, city of London, Ontario. The terrorist attack was said to have been planned for a major transportation hub during morning or evening rush hour.
Driver was known to Canadian authorities as an ISIS sympathizer,
Wayne Driver, Aaron’s father, spoke with the media today expressing his sorrow over his son’s death, but sharing that he was not surprised. He and his wife, Aaron’s stepmother, had observed Aaron becoming more secretive and chanting as he became more enamoured of radical Islamic websites.
Wayne Driver shared his son’s history. Aaron’s mother died of cancer when he was just seven years old. His father said he never got over her death and the father and son had a troubled relationship since. “I knew he was lost but I didn’t know how far gone he was” Wayne Driver said.
