Canada’s women’s soccer team play Brazil for bronze

Canada’s women’s soccer team had their hopes derailed by Germany in a 2-0 semifinal loss at the Rio Olympics today. Now John Herdman’s team will go after the bronze for the second Games in a row.

Melanie Behringer and Sara Daebritz of Germany got the ball in on either side of halftime, putting the pressure on Canada’s dreams of going for gold this time.

The second-ranked Germans finished the Canadians’ four-game winning streak at the tournament. Down 2-0 after 59 minutes, Canada made valiant attempts but could not get a goal before the thin crowd at Mineirao Stadium.

When the final whistle blew, the tearful Canadian players were left consoling each other on the field. John Herdman, the Canadian coach, told CBC Sports he was “gutted” for his players.

“I thought they worked hard tonight, they’ve given it their all and they came up short,” he said.

“We always seem to do things the hard way,” he added, in reference to Canada’s hard road to bronze at the London Olympics, four years ago.

Today’s loss was the first in Rio for the 10th-ranked Canadians, who went 3-0-0 in pool play before downing No. 3 France 1-0 in the quarter-finals.
