Jacques Cartier Bridge lighting up for 375th and 150th

The Jacques Cartier Bridge will be illuminated by night for the historic occasions of Montreal’s 375th anniversary and Canada’s 150th. The tandem honour will begin May 17, 2017, Montreal’s special date, and on July 1st, Canada Day, it may be lit up in red and white.

The 2,800 lights will be installed beginning this fall, across the 2.5 kilometre span. The lighting will be directed at the structure to avoid washing out starlight. Created in 365 shades of colour, the lights will change in keeping with the season and the occasion.

“Living Connections” is the name of the project that is the work of six lighting and engineering companies under the direction of Montreal’s renowned Moment Factory.

The federal bridge corporation is contributing $30 million (Cdn) while the city of Montreal will pay $9.5 million (Cdn), much to the consternation of many people.

In a CROP poll of 1,000 Quebecers earlier this year, it was revealed that only eight per cent of respondents in the Montreal area approved of the plan at its current price.

If the price were reduced, 52 per cent of respondents supported it, while 30 per cent said they were opposed at any price.

We’ll see how people feel next summer!
