Curling Canada has cancelled six more curling championships events that were scheduled for 2021 due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
According to a press release from the organization on Thursday, the Continental Cup, the Canadian Under-18 Championships, the New Holland Canadian Junior, Under-21, championships, the Canadian Wheelchair Championship, the Canadian Under 15 RockFest, and the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association championships have all been cancelled and will not be rescheduled to happen later in the season.
Curling Canada said that the decision to cancel the events was made for the safety of the participants and volunteers, travel restrictions, and the cost of running the events with the restrictions caused by the pandemic.
“We considered all options, but in the end, we had to make the responsible decision — for the athletes, for the volunteers and for the organization, to ensure the safety of those involved in the championships as well as the viability of the sport in Canada,” Katherine Henderson, the chief executive officer of Curling Canada, said in a statement.
The organization added that a significant factor in cancelling the Continental Cup was due to the fact that international teams likely would have not been able to participate.
Championships scheduled in the 2020-2021 season including the Scotties Tournament of Hearts, the Tim Hortons Brier, the World Men’s Curling Championship, the Home Hardware Canada Cup and the Canadian Mixed Doubles Championship are still scheduled to go forward.
