New Shipping Rules Announced for Canadian Arctic Waters

OTTAWA: Canada’s government is asserting its claim to its Arctic territory by imposing new rules on foreign ships sailing through Canada’s northern waters. Transport Minister John Baird says that beginning on July 1, large vessels will be required to report their identity and intended route before entering the Northwest Passage. Mr. Baird says that the new regulations will ensure efficient navigation, improve vessel safety and protect the marine environment.
