Terrorist video threat against Canada and “America”

A new video has surfaced on the internet in which a fundamentalist Islamic fighter directly threatens Canada and then the US and Obama.

Michel Juneau-Katsuya is a former senior manager and intelligence officer with the Canadian Security Intelligence Service (CSIS) and is currently CEO of the Northgate Group, a security consulting and advisory firm. I reached him by mobile phone in Ottawa.

Someone apparently from an extreme fundamentalist Islamic group currently in Syria, has made a direct threat against Canada and the US.

Security Intelligence expert, Michel Juneau-Katsuya, is a former senior agent and manager at CSIS, now CEO of Northgate Group, a security risk-assessment agency.

It’s unusual in that Canada is almost never mentioned directly in such threats made by any number of terrorist organizations.

This one is called the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant, also known as ISIL. . It is an al-Qaeda breakaway group that dominates the Sunni insurgency in Iraq, but some of whom are currently fighting in Syria.

Speaking in a relatively un-accented English, the militant says after fighting in the Middle East, the group will turn against Canada, the US and (President) Obama.

The speaker does not identify his nationality, only saying he is an “immigrant to Syria”.

In the video he says, “This is a message to Canada and all the American tyrants: We are coming and we will destroy you, with permission from Allah the almighty,”  He finishes by tearing up what appears to be a passport, and throwing it onto a small fire.

Because of un-accented English, and the unusual direct mention of Canada, it is suspected he has some Canadian connection.

Juneau-Katsuya says it is known that there are a number of Canadian citizens who have left to join various ethnic and religious groups fighting around the globe.

For example, two Canadian-born men were killed in the deadly terrorist attack on an Algeria gas plant in January 0f 2013

A Russian Canadian was killed in July of 2012 along with several members of a Dagestan insurgent group.

Juneau- katsuya says  the issue of people who have joined insurgents abroad and return, is a serious one as these individuals will likely return to Canada at some point, possibly more radicalized and now trained in military tactics and things like bomb making.

While there have been several plots against Canadian targets, and several arrests, there have no successful attacks in Canada to date.
