Controversy reignites over ex-leader’s air travel

Alison Redford says she did nothing wrong in the way she used government aircraft while she was the premier of Canada’s richest province, Alberta. The public broadcaster, CBC, reports that the province’s auditor general found Redford’s staff made false bookings so that the premier could fly alone.

Redford denies she flew on government planes alone and says there was no directive stopping others from flying on planes she was travelling on. The opposition Wildrose Party wants the national police, the RCMP, to investigate.

Redford has, in the past, been criticized for her travel expenses and sometimes having her daughter accompany her on government aircraft. She has paid some travel expenses back to the government. She resigned as premier on March 23 after members of her caucus complained about her lavish spending.

Alberta is the only Canadian province which still maintains a fleet of aircraft for government employees. The opposition would like the fleet to be disbanded and sold.
