The Ottawa residence of Liberal Party leader Justin Trudeau was broken into over the weekend while his wife and three young children were asleep and Mr. Trudeau was away campaigning.
Nothing was stolen and no one was harmed, but a note left at the back door of the house warned that another such incident could happen if his family doesn’t lock its doors.
The note was on top of a pile of items taken from the house, including kitchen knives.
On Sunday, Mr. Trudeau, who is seeking to rebuild the Liberal Party in anticipation of the 2015 federal election, likely in October, says he is now taking another look at the amount of time he spends on the hustings.
Mr. Trudeau says he and his wife, Sophie Gregoire-Trudeau, have had some “very serious discussions” about the extensive travel schedule he maintains and the exposure it places on his young family.
Mr. Trudeau would not go into details about the break-in and if there was a political dimension to it.
Citing a police source, CBC News reported the message stated that the items could have been stolen but weren’t, so the family should lock its doors in the future.
Following the break-in, Ms. Gregoire-Trudeau and the couple’s three children, Xavier James, Ella-Grace and Hadrien, left Ottawa and joined their husband in Montreal where he took part in the city’s gay pride festivities.
At the time of the break-in Mr. Trudeau was in Winnipeg.
