Prime Minister Stephen Harper used the phrase “strong families” to promote a tax measure that would benefit families with stay-at-home moms. Civil servants were asked to retweet messages about the tax measure using the hashtag #Strong-Families.

Civil servants used for partisan goals: opposition

A senior government official has asked public servants to use official Twitter feeds to promote a recently-proposed tax measure with a slogan used in the last election campaign. Liberal finance critic Scott Brison says the tweets are partisan and public servants should not be asked to promote them.

“It shows again that the Conservatives (party currently in power) don’t understand the principle of a professional public service separated from partisan politics,” said Brison.

The government also took out radio and television ads promoting the measure even before it is voted on, he noted.

An election is expected next year in Canada. Often there is a flurry of announcements before an election campaign officially starts and each party’s expenditures are limited.
