Only days after Canada’s Auditor General Michael Ferguson reported Canada’s search and rescue system (SAR) was facing sustainability issues including use of old equipment, Defence Minister Peter MacKay announced Thursday (May 2) the system would get more money and rules.
“As the lead Minister for Search and Rescue activities, I firmly believe there is no such thing as ‘good enough’ when it comes to saving the lives of our fellow Canadians,” said Minister MacKay. “Our responsibility to ensure the safety of Canadians is paramount, and we continuously seek ways to improve search and rescue in Canada.”
