For the provincially controlled retail sales outlet for wines and spirits in the province of Ontario, two major events are looming.
One is the first long-weekend holiday of the season which traditionally signals the beginning of summer, and the other is a potential strike by its employees
The Victoria day weekend named in honour of Queen Victoria, represents a massive amount of sales for the Liquor Control Board of Ontario (LCBO) as Ontarians celebrate the arrival of summer.
However, the LCBO’s 7,000 employees voted 95% in favour of a strike mandate in April. Their 4-year contract ended on March 31st The major issues are wages and health and safety standards
“Customers entertaining [Victoria Day weekend] can avoid any possible service disruptions by shopping our stores early and stocking up,” said LCBO senior vice-president Bob Clevely in a release.
Talks between the two sides are ongoing, but the workers would be in a legal strike position on May 17th.
