Protests by Canadian diplomats spread to Africa

Listen

Canadian diplomats are increasing their pressure tactics on their employer the Canadian government with a limited strike in Africa as Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird and Governor General David Johnston began an official visit on Monday (May 13).

The striking diplomats are members of the Professional Association of Foreign Service Officers.

The association started with work-to-rule tactics, no overtime, not answering e-mails after 5PM, leaving cell phones at work. That followed with information pickets in Ottawa, then Washington.

Now as Canada’s Foreign Affairs Minister and Governor General start multi-nation missions in Africa, some diplomats have walked off the job. The Association has been in a legal strike position for weeks.

RCI’s Wojtek Gwiazda has a report.
