The Information and Privacy Commissioner of Canada’s most populous province of Ontario, Ann Cavoukian, released her annual report Tuesday (May 28) marking the 25 years of the office of the commissioner.
“I have been fortunate to find myself in a unique historical position as Commissioner during the advent of the Internet – it drastically changed the very concepts of how we view access and privacy,” said Cavoukian. “Advances in information technology have not only inspired people to develop new products and services that enhance our lives, they have also given rise to a backlash by those who wish to erode our privacy and fear a culture of openness.”
In the 60 page report she emphatically resisted the opinion that privacy is dead: “One of my least favourite myths about privacy is that “privacy is dead” and it is compounded when it is attributed to new technological innovations or to a changing mindset amongst young people.”
