Montreal city council has elected a new interim mayor, Laurent Blanchard. His election follows the short interim mayorship of Michael Applebaum was was elected to replace Gerard Tremblay who resigned last November.
The new mayor of Canada’s second largest city was the head of the council’s executive body. He was elected with 30 out of 61 votes. The council’s speaker Harout Chitilian came close with 28 votes. Councillor Jane-Cowell Poitras won only three votes.
The election was held because the previous interim mayor Michael Applebaum resigned last week after being arrested on charges of corruption. In his resignation speech he insisted he was innocent.
Applebaum replaced Gerard Tremblay who resigned last November amidst increasing questions about municipal corruption. Tremblay has said he had done nothing wrong.
A municipal election is scheduled for November 3.
