Having life jackets on board not enough to save lives, say safety advocates.

Wear the life jacket, safety advocates urge

Canadian law says you have to have a personal floatation device in your boat or watercraft for each person on board, but safety advocates say it won’t save you from drowning unless you wear it. Some like, Barbara Byers of the Lifesaving Society, say wearing it should be the law.

Many Canadians just don’t want to wear life jackets because they feel they are restrictive, summer is so short and they just want to have fun. Recent drownings in the province of Ontario have reminded folks that fun can turn to tragedy in no time.

A canoeist and paddle-boarder both died in the past week. Neither was wearing a life jacket.

Canadians got used to wearing seatbelts when it became mandatory, points out Byers. We could get used to wearing personal floatation devices.
