The Supreme Court of Canada has extended the deadline for submissions to September 6 for its examination of what powers the federal government has to abolish or reform Parliament’s upper chamber, the Senate.
The federal government turned to the court to clarify its position this past February.
Last week, almost all of Canada’s provinces and territories had sent submissions by the August 30 deadline..
Almost all the submissions say that the federal government must consult with the provinces. Some suggest that there has to be unanimous agreement to abolish the Senate.
Last month, the Chief Justice of the court, Beverley McLachlin warned it could take time for the court to make a decision.
