McGill University installs French-speaking leader

McGill University will formally install its first ever francophone principal on Tuesday. Pundits suggest the university made the move to boost its standing with the government of the province of Quebec, which provides much of its funding.

The official language of Quebec is French and the government staunchly defends and promotes the use of the French language and French culture. McGill is primarily an English institution although its students are able to submit papers in French.

The government slashed funding to universities including McGill midway through their fiscal year and they are struggling to stanch the financial bleeding. McGill and its new principal are intent of protecting McGill’s international reputation.
