Montrealer Mylène Paquette finishes solo row across Atlantic

Canadian Mylène Paquette has become the first North American woman to row solo across the North Atlantic. The city of Montreal native left the Atlantic coast port city of Halifax just over four months ago in a specially designed boat powered by her rowing, and the currents.

As she was pulled to shore by a tugboat, Paquette told CBC radio host Mike Finnerty: “I’m quite excited. I’m feeling weak, really weak … but I’m so excited and I guess that I’m proud.”

“I’m used to being alone,” she said. “I’m going to have some nice food in several minutes. So I’m looking forward to eating.”

She left Halifax on July 6, rowing with no motor or sail across the North Atlantic to travel 2,700 nautical miles (5000 km).

In September, the rower got a helping hand from the world’s largest ocean liner, the Queen Mary 2, when her boat capsized and she lost some key items, including her anchor, iPhone and satellite phone. She was hit by the remnants of Hurricane Humberto. The crew donated food and supplies, including a new satellite phone and two anchors.
