Supreme Court of Canada ends hearings into Senate reform

Listen

After three days of hearings, the Supreme Court of Canada is expected to take six months to a year before it rules on a Canadian government request to determine what rights it has to impose term limits on senators in Parliament’s upper chamber, the Senate. And whether it can abolish the Senate unilaterally.

The hearings ended on Thursday, November 14.

The ruling Conservative government of Prime Minister Stephen Harper has since its election talked of reforming the Senate, which is appointed, and not elected to office.

In the last few months, the government has faced serious scrutiny over alleged misspending by senators, particularly government senators appointed by the Prime Minister.
