Greenpeace activists scale Montreal landmark

Three well-equipped Greenpeace activists scaled Montreal’s Biosphere and unfurled a huge banner demanding freedom for colleagues jailed in Russia. Canadians Paul Ruzycki and Alexandre Paul were among 30 members of the environmental group arrested by Russian authorities in September for protesting at an oil rig.

Greenpeace wants the Canadian government and citizens to apply pressure on Russia to release the activists. A Russian court has so far freed 14 of the activists on bail. Originally they were charged with piracy, but it appears the charges will be downgraded to hooliganism.

Police and emergency crews gathered at the Biosphere but decided not to pursue the activists. Instead they decided to wait until the three descended and then charge them with trespassing.
