Tuition fees for foreign students at the University of Alberta in western Canada may be going up by five per cent, leading some to believe they are being unfairly targeted. Canadians students are not facing the same increase because their tuition fees are regulated by the provincial government.
“We are sort of the cash cows for the university,” said Rabib Alam, a second-year engineering student from Bangladesh.
The minister for advanced education denies the province is taking advantage of international students and says the fees they are charged are competitive and reflective of the costs.
Canadian universities eagerly court international students and charge them substantially higher fees than they do Canadian students.
The University of Alberta’s board of governors will vote on the tuition hike on December 13.
