The inner face of terrorism

ListenFive years ago last month, ten Pakistani men associated with the terror group Laskhar-e-Tayyiba stormed buildings in Mumbai, Inida, killing 164 people–including two Canadians–and wounding dozens more.

One of those wounded was Canadian actor Michael Rudder, who was in Mumbai on a meditation retreat. Rudder was severely wounded and still suffers from both the physical and psychological after-effects of the attack.

But like Nelson Mandela, who was honoured Tuesday in a memorial service in Johannesburg, Rudder has refused to feel sorry for himself and has maintained his attitude of forgiveness toward the attackers.

Rudder would never compare himself to Mandela, but a closer look reveals there may be more similarities than meet the eye–especially when it comes to summoning the courage to deal with insanity and terror.

Terry Haig spoke with Michael Rudder by phone from his home in Quebec’s Eastern Townships.
