Canadian government’s performance rating plunges in 2013

An annual poll of Canadians’ attitudes has shown a dramatic drop in confidence in the performance of the federal government, according to a poll released by Nanos Research and the Institute for Research on Public Policy.

Fifty-six (56) per cent of Canadians polled said the government of Prime Minister Stephen Harper did a poor job in 2013. That compares to 33 per cent last year and 25 per cent in 2011.

The polling firm and research institute have conducted the “Mood of Canada” poll every year since 2007.

The questions asked about:

  • Performance of the government.
  • Direction of the country.
  • Federal-provincial relations.
  • Canada’s reputation abroad.

In each case, pollsters found that opinions this year were decidedly more negative than they were last year.

This year’s results are from a National Nanos RDD Crowdsource random survey of 1,000 Canadians conducted between December 14th and 16th, 2013. The results were statistically checked and weighted using the latest Census data.

The margin of error for a random survey of 1,000 Canadians is ±3.1 percentage points, 19 times out of 20.
