Niagara Falls on New Year’s Eve

It’s billed as “Canada’s largest free New Year’s Eve extravaganza”, and this year Canadian music stars, Serena Ryder and the Sam Roberts Band, are sharing the bill with neighbour Demi Lovato, from the American side of the falls.

In Niagara Falls today, they’re going through the dress rehearsals and preparing the popular destination for all the re-routed traffic tomorrow.  Public transit will take people from designated parking areas to Queen Victoria Park, a site with a great view of the falls.

Hot chocolate and coffee are served and tented areas that can provide warmth and an alcoholic drink are also available. The experience begins and ends with fireworks, at 8:45 pm and midnight.

The event is a tradition that started 22 years ago.  Last year it grew to 60,000 people gathered to ring-in, and sing-in the new year in the mist of the falls.  And Canadians across the country can join the televised portion from 10 pm to midnight.
