Not only is unemployment up, Canada’s employment rate barely above recession levels

A big jump in the December unemployment rate in Canada has many observers concerned. And economist Jim Stanford says looking at employment rates, shows Canadians are barely better off than at the height of the recession in 2009.

On Friday (January 10), the Canadian government’s statistic gathering agency, Statistics Canada, reported an unemployment rate of 7.2 per cent in December, compared to 6.9 per cent in November.

The decline in full time jobs fueled the drop and was only partly offset by a gain of part time jobs.
