Canadian journalist detained in Egypt

Canadian Mohamed Fahmy is among 20 journalists detained in Egypt on charges of joining or assisting a terrorist group and spreading false news that endangers national security. The journalists work for the Al-Jazeera TV network. It is the first time authorities have put journalists on trial on terror-related charges.

Fahmy’s brother Adel has denied the allegations against his brother in several interviews with the media. “They were working properly, covering the news from both sides without any bias… they’re just scapegoats,” he said. Al-Jazeera too has denied any bias and has demanded the release of its reporters.

Canadian officials have raised the case with senior Egyptian officials, confirmed the department of  Foreign Affairs in an email.
