How the city of Toronto’s police force uses force and treats those with mental illnesses will be reviewed by the Office of the Independent Police Review Director (OIPRD), the independent office responsible for dealing with complaints about police actions in Canada’s most populous province of Ontario.
“Recent high-profile cases of Toronto Police Service’s use of force have raised concerns among Toronto citizens and affected public confidence in policing,” said Gerry McNeilly, OIPRD director in a statement released Monday (February 24).
“My office has received public complaints that are significant enough, in my opinion, to warrant a systemic review. I believe it is in the public interest for the OIPRD, as an impartial civilian oversight agency, to undertake this review.”
The Office of the Independent Police Review Director (OIPRD) opened on October 19, 2009. The OIPRD is an arms-length agency of the Ontario Ministry of the Attorney General, staffed entirely by civilians.
