A shop owner in the French-speaking province of Quebec no longer has to translate her store’s Facebook page into French. Eva Cooper had received a letter ordering to translate her page from English into French by March in order to comply with Quebec language laws designed to protect and promote the French language.
Cooper had argued the law contained nothing about social media posts. It does clearly govern business signs and promotional materials.
Now the office which enforces the law has softened its stance, saying the Facebook page must include French, but it can continue to have English content if the conversation is of a social nature.
Cooper has requested the office send her permission in writing to post bilingually.
