Researchers are tracking worms that are making an unusual appearance in Canada’s Northwest Territories and damaging boreal forests. They also worry the worms may move into the neighbouring Yukon territory. Earthworms have not inhabited northern soil since before the last ice age.
The problem is that worms churn up the stratified soil that northern boreal plants depend on. Biology Professor Erin Bayne of the University of Alberta says this phenomenon has already resulted in local extirpation of a couple of plant species in the U.S. state of Minnesota.
Report worms, ask scientists
Biologists and volunteers are concentrating their search for earthworms near roads, campgrounds and boat launches, because worm cocoons can hitch rides in boats, bait and tackle boxes as well as truck tires.
They have also launched a campaign to educate anglers to not dump their worm bait on land or in water.
Researchers are asking for Northerners to call in any worm sightings along with photographs and locations where worms have been found. They can also download their Worm Tracker data collection app on iTunes.
