School cancels aquarium visit after parent protest

A school in the province of Ontario has cancelled a trip to Marineland in Niagara Falls after a parent protested saying there was nothing educational about using animals for entertainment. The aquarium is home to beluga whales, dolphins and orcas.

Canadian schools often organize field trips for students for educational purposes. Parent Jennifer Jamieson received a letter from Mountain View Elementary School about the planned trip involving her nine-year-old son’s class.

A self-described “animal liberation activist,” Jamieson immediately sent an email to the teacher requesting she scrap the trip and find an alternative. She was delighted when the teacher complied. Now she wants the school board to ban all field trips to Marineland.

Marineland has been under siege in recent years by animal rights activists who have accused the park of mistreating its animals. Park officials deny the claims. Marineland has in fact launched a $7 million lawsuit against the Toronto Star newspaper over a series of reports it published about conditions at the facility.
