To mark the 100th anniversary of Canadians arriving in Britain to prepare for the First World War, Canada’s National Arts Centre Orchestra will tour the U.K. in October. Historian Margaret MacMillan will join the tour to speak about the close relationship between Britain and Canada in the time just before and for the duration of the war.
The first wave of Canadian soldiers bound for France first spent months training in England’s Salisbury Plain area. The orchestra will perform at Salisbury Cathedral which has the tallest spire in Britain, as well as in London, Edinburgh, Nottingham and Bristol.
“This tour will showcase not only the brilliant work of Canadian composers and the NAC Orchestra musicians, it will also allow school children on both sides of the Atlantic to explore the themes of remembrance and healing through music,” Christopher Deacon, managing director of the NAC Orchestra, said in a statement.
